Gail Zimmerman, MD: Depression/Anxiety Treatment Options

Depression and anxiety are increasingly prevalent mental health conditions in the United States. As of 2023, nearly 29% of U.S. adults have been diagnosed with depression at some point, and 17.8% are currently experiencing or being treated for it—the highest rates recorded in recent years. Anxiety disorders also affect a significant portion of the population, with lifetime prevalence estimated at nearly 29%. Young adults, in particular, report higher rates of these conditions, with 50% of those aged 18–24 experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression in 2023.

Treatment options for depression and anxiety often include medication and psychotherapy, but exercise therapy is gaining recognition as an effective alternative or complementary approach. Research shows that regular physical activity can reduce symptoms of depression and anxiety as effectively as medication, especially for mild to moderate cases. Exercise not only improves mood through endorphin release but also enhances sleep, self-esteem, and overall energy levels. Both aerobic activities like jogging and strength training have shown significant benefits, with moderate to vigorous intensity yielding the best results. Incorporating exercise into treatment plans can empower individuals to take an active role in managing their mental health while improving physical well-being. Newer medications offer significant help with fewer or no side effects.
