Skin Cancer

What is skin cancer?

Skin cancer occurs when abnormal skin cells begin to grow in your epidermis, which is your outer layer of skin. There are three main types of skin cancer:

  • Basal cell carcinoma
  • Squamous cell carcinoma
  • Melanoma

Anyone can get skin cancer, though the risk is higher for people who have a family history of skin cancer, light skin color, skin that freckles or burns easily, blonde or red hair, or blue or green eyes.

What are the symptoms of basal cell carcinoma?

Basal cell carcinoma originates in the basal skin cell layer where your skin experiences the most sun. It’s common and curable if caught early.

Signs that you may have basal cell carcinoma include a sore that won’t heal well, a flesh-colored raised area that looks like a mole or bump, or itchy red patches.

How can I prevent skin cancer?

There are several easy steps you can take to increase the chance that you won’t develop skin cancer, such as:

  • Wear sunscreen
  • Avoid the sun during the hottest part of the day
  • Wear protective gear like a hat, long sleeves, and sunglasses

It’s important to see Dr. Zimmerman each year for a detailed skin cancer screening so you can catch any problems before they progress. In an efford to help protect her patients, Dr. Zimmerman carries a variety of protective sunscreens in her office.
